About Our Ranch! Red
Horse Ranch was originally established in 1995 by Jeff
and Sue Davis. We had
planned on being a Foundation Quarter Horse Ranch. In January of 1995
however I read an Article in Horse Illustrated about the American Bashkir
Curly. I was extremely curious and taken by this breed. I had mentioned
to Jeff how interesting they sounded, he commented that perhaps we could
find "ONE". I put the article away and didn't think too much
more about it. About a year later in April, I happened to come across
the magazine with the article in a pile while cleaning and read it again.Again
I became very intruigued. Early in May we were going to Arkansas to purchase
a foundation Buckskin AQHA filly. On our travels we often enjoy picking
up small town newspapers to see what interesting items might be for sale
in the region. We happened to pick up a Houston, MO newspaper and lo and
behold found a herd dispersal of American Bashkir Curlies!!! Needless
to say we contacted the owner and ended up with not just one, but FIVE!
We started out with one very old emaciated mare (who turned out to be
bred as well), two 2 year olds and two yearlings. Only the old mare had
had any handling or training, so there we were with 4 completely wild,
not even halter trained youngsters!! As time progressed
we got the 2 year olds started. The first, a straight haired blue roan
gelding (whom we gelded after we purchased him) went to our first horse
fair with us the following Spring and was under saddle!! We also took
the two yearlings (now 2 year olds) in hand! Within the next couple of
years we got all four under saddle and ended up selling all our Quarter
horses! The old mare, Star Girl has since passed away, but ended up producing
two more foals for us. Since that time our four other original remaining Curlies have been sold, however we continue to produce and train quality Curlies. Our horses have held numerous titles including the ABCR National Champion Performance Horse titles for 2000,2001,2003,2004 and 2005, with Reserve titles for 2004 and 2005. We also hold the ABCR National Champion Versatility Horse titles for 2003, 2004 and 2005 with Reserves in 2004 and 2005. Our Youth Riders have received the ABCR National Youth Rider Award for 2003, 2004 and 2005. Our goal is to help folks find good well trained Curlies that they can ride and enjoy! Although we do not produce many babies, we continue to offer saddle trained horses, training and lessons. We are currently the only registered breeder of American Bashkir Curly horses in the state of Illinois.
